Cagley, Edgar Max
Edgar Max Cagley born August 6, 1937, to Paul and Velma Cagley in Chickasaw, Iowa, passed away peacefully the Monday morning, October 22, 2007, following a year-long battle with cancer.
Ed is survived by his wife of nearly 50 years, Dorothy "Dot"; their daughter, Leslie Cagley and her husband, Greg Johnson of Victoria, British Columbia; their daughter, Pamela Brooks and her daughters, Kelly and Tara, of Lancaster, South Carolina; and their son, Mark Cagley of Charlotte, North Carolina.
Ed is also survived by his brother, Paul Cagley and his wife, Joan, of Fulton, Iowa, and their children, Lawrence, Paula, Steven, Robert, and David; and by his sister, Shirley Haluska of Miami, Florida; and her daughters Gilda, Michal, and Terry.
Ed was an active father and participated in numerous family-related activities, including coaching Little League baseball and basketball, teaching a Sunday School Communicant class, taking a leadership role on the school board, and performing in magic shows with his children.
Ed and Dot were accomplished country-western dancers, and were very active with the UCWDC, where they won four World Championships, and for whom Ed developed software for competition scoring. Ed and Dot received the Director's Award for their many contributions to the organization.
Ed was a mathematician and computer scientist, retired from the Federal Government after a successful career of more than 35 years. Graduated from Iowa State University in 1960, Ed also received a Master of Science from the University of North Carolina. His many years of professional service were acknowledged by multiple Meritorious Service Awards from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and several official commendations from the Department of the Army. Ed published numerous significant papers in the fields of mathematics and computer science. During his years as Chief of the Charlottesville Office of the Mathematics and Computation Laboratory, he inspired many by his leadership, creativity, and zeal for technical innovation.
A small remembrance will be held in the spring, and in lieu of flowers a memorial opportunity will be available at that time.
